HEAL EDUCATES

Liberia's 14-year civil war devastated the country's education system and stripped away the income sources families depended on to send their children to school. According to UNESCO*, an estimated 50,000 children were killed in the crisis. Many of the survivors — wounded, orphaned, or abandoned — witnessed or were forced to commit terrible atrocities. An estimated 1.4 million children experienced violence, hunger, and homelessness during the war.

Beyond the trauma inflicted on children, the collapse of the education sector's institutions, facilities, programs, and personnel left behind a generation of illiterate, semi-literate, and unskilled youth and adults — including ex-combatants, young girls with children, and disabled youth.

Faced with these staggering numbers, H.E.A.L, Inc. made it a mission to help ease this burden, especially for orphans. That mission became H.E.A.L EDUCATES — a program providing educational resources and scholarships to orphans and underprivileged children in communities with the greatest need.

Who Benefits?

H.E.A.L, Inc. partners with schools and organizations in local communities that serve orphans and underprivileged children but have inadequate, limited, or no learning resources.

We have supported:

  • 35 elementary, middle, and high school students on scholarship in Liberia, West Africa

  • 2 post-high school girls attending a vocational institute

  • 1 Undergrad student

  • 1 Library room built

  • 20+ Laptops donated

Our Approach

Schools in Monrovia, Liberia's capital, and those outside the city face a vast disparity in resources. H.E.A.L, Inc. focuses on schools and organizations working outside the capital, where the need is greatest.

Each year, through a stringent assessment process, we select schools and organizations to partner with via a formal memorandum of understanding. This focused approach allows us to maximize limited funding and direct it toward schools and organizations serving mainly orphans and underprivileged children.

What We Provide

  • Construction of functional library rooms

  • Books

  • Laptops

  5. Scholarships: Once a school is selected, a set number of scholarships is awarded after a rigorous vetting process.

  6. Renewal: Scholarship recipients' academic performance is reviewed at the end of each school year to determine continued eligibility.
